Employee Free Choice Act (or Card Check) removes secret ballots from the union organization process. Currently, labor organizations that seek to represent a group of employees must first show employee interest by collecting authorization cards. They then petition the NLRB to hold an election to determine whether employees want to be represented. Card Check would allow union organization through the successful collection of authorization cards from the majority, eliminating the secret ballots. This is not only a big business issue. In 2005, the National Labor Relations Board conducted 2,649 union representation elections. More than 20 percent of those elections involved bargaining units of fewer than 10 employees and 70% of them involved bargaining units of fewer than 50 employees. The event will assist you in understanding the finer points of the legislation, arm you with ways to contact key legislators to oppose this bill and provide you with tools to educate your employees.
