Embracing the concept of the library as a laboratory, the Mandeville Gallery and the Schaffer Library at Union College present the Art Installation Series in an effort to shift the visual arts from a gallery setting into a public space. Artist Stacey Robinson is the fifth artist featured in the series. His work discusses ideas of “Black Utopias” as spaces of peace away from colonial influence by considering Black protest movements and the art movements that document them.
He will installing his artwork Monday, March 27 through Thursday, March 30, from 9 am to 5 pm at the Library Learning Commons on the first floor in the Schaffer Library at Union College. Students, faculty/staff, and the public will be able to view the artist at work, observe the creative process in real time, and informally interact with the artist as he creates.
There will be an Artist Talk and Reception on Friday, March 31 during Common Hour, 12:55 - 1:45 pm, in the Learning Commons, where the artist will discuss his participation in the series. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
Funding for this exhibition and event is generously provided by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant, as part of the "Our Shared Humanities" college-wide initiative.
