Did you know that vascular birthmarks are the most common birth defect in infants? Did you know that 1 in 10 babies are born with a vascular birthmark such as a hemangioma or port wine stain? Most of these appear on the face and are flat or raised red/pink birthmarks. Some can become disfiguring and problematic. Did you know that the leading not for profit in the world for these birthmarks was founded and is established right here in the Capital District? The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation (VBF) has networked over 60,000 children worldwide into medical treatment since 1994, and many of these children have been from the Capital District. VBF is an international charitable organization that networks families affected by a vascular birthmark, tumor, or syndrome to the appropriate medical professionals for evaluation and/or treatment and provides informational resources as well as sponsors physician education, research, and programs that promote acceptance for living with a birthmark. On Friday evening, May 4th VBF will be holding their 4th Annual Challenge at The Crossings of Colonie, South Pavilion, This event is a sanctioned 5K run, community walk and kid's fun run. Festivities begin at 5:00 pm. The kid's fun run begins at 5:45, the 5K begins at 6:00pm and the community walk begins at 7:00pm. Because it is families that VBF serves, this event will be family focused and will feature festivities geared for children and adults as well as food and entertainment.
