Widely regarded as a masterpiece of comedy and menace, Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party is a dark, genre-defying absurdity that will stick in your mind long after the final curtain. Stanley Webber is a man with a mysterious past who is lying low in an English boarding house by the sea. Adored by his eccentric landlady, tolerated by her husband, and befriended by a local young woman, he otherwise lives in a self-imposed exile. He wishes desperately to be anywhere else, but ultimately has nowhere else to go. It is here that his former life catches up to him in the form of two frightening figures named Goldberg and McCann. Not content to be subtle, they convince the landlady to throw Stanley a birthday party, and use it as a pretense to torture him with sadistic mind games. The subsequent action unfolds like a fever dream, with a mysterious beginning that speeds ruthlessly to a terrifying and ambiguous conclusion. Fans of David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock would do well not to miss this show! There will be a special “Talk Back” Session for audience members to discuss the show with cast and crew, including director Linda Shirey and Assistant Director Barbara Davis-Dickman, after the performance on Sunday, February 19th. As a special “Birthday Present” of sorts, Confetti Stage is also making any student ticket purchase “buy one, get one free” in addition to the already discounted student admission fee of $10!
