Hot Tub Guide > Health Benefits of Hot Tubs and Spas

Hot tubs are not only relaxing and enjoyable, but can have health benefits that can assist a number of differnt ailments. Time spent in a hot tub can help those with diabetes and arthritis, stress relief and aid in getting a better night's sleep.health

Diabetes: According an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, soaking in a hot tub could have health benefits for people with Type II Diabetes as it can increase blood flow to skeletal muscles much like exercise does.

According to the article “The temperature of the water in the tub ranged from 37.8°C to 41.0°C, and the patients' oral temperature rose an average of 0.8°C during each session. After 10 days, one patient reduced his dose of insulin by 18 percent to prevent hypoglycemic reactions." Read the full article>

Arthritis: Increase in blood circulation helps relieve pain for aching joint, stiffness and arthritis. According to Arthritis.org, benefits of heat include muscle relaxation, decreased pain and stiffness and greater ease when exercising.

Stress relief: Stress suppresses our immune system, so spending a few minutes a day out in the dark, looking at the stars with nothing but warm relaxing water can only improve your overall heath

A Better Night's Sleep: According to Sleep, a scientific journal, a hot tub soak within 90 minutes before bedtime can help one achieve a deeper sleep!

General Precautions:

Be sure to check your spa booklet for general safety tips and medical precautions. According to Arthritis.org also follow these precautions:

  • You may need help getting in and out of the spa or pool. Have someone nearby to help you if necessary.
  • Consult your doctor before using or purchasing a spa or pool if you have any special medical conditions such as: lung or heart disease, circulatory problems, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, skin irritations or any other serious illness.
  • Check the thermometer for appropriate temperature before entering the spa or pool.
  • Remember that individuals react differently to heat; if you start to feel lightheaded or nauseated, get out of the water immediately.
  • If joint swelling, stiffness or pain increase, discontinue the use of heat and exercise and consult your doctor.
  • Never use a pool or hot tub during or after drinking alcohol or using drugs. These may cause sleepiness, drowsiness or changes in blood pressure.
  • Pregnant women should not enter a hot tub without first consulting their doctor.
