Adventures with the GPS

user-pic

Can you remember life before the invention of the GPS? I can! There were plenty of days that I spent riding around with a crinkled/torn map trying to find dusty county roads while hunting for the big story during my news reporting days. When that didn't work, you had to break down and stop to ask for directions and pray that the person telling you 1) was from the area, 2) knew what they were talking about and 3) liked the television station I worked for (there were several times when folks just sent us on wild goose chases out of spite).

It's no secret that I probably wouldn't have found my way to New York from Mississippi without the GPS. That magical, yet slightly obnoxious, voice led me through 1,450 miles filled with tolls, road closures and detours. Me & my GPS made it just fine on our own!

When she's right, it's a lifesaver...but when she's wrong, boy is she wrong! Just the other day Brett and I had to make a quick trip to Boston to pick up a few last minute things for the baby (only three more weeks to go!). Our primary stop was Ikea and the GPS found the location no problem...but when Brett needed to feed his "Mexican tooth," as I like to call it, we punched in a search for the closest Q'doba restaurant.

This is where she told us to go...

Our guess is that there might have been a Q'doba inside the Patriot's playing field? Nothing like a little side trip adventure caused by technology!

Heather Flanigan

When Heather Flanigan and her husband Brett Garrett packed their bags and moved 1500 miles from Tupelo, Mississippi to upstate New York, they really had no idea what they were in for!  The newlyweds met in an Arkansas television newsroom before deciding to check out things on this side of the Mason-Dixon line.  Since then, they've cashed in their Southern hoe cakes for some Yankee cannoli.  Now  in a land far, far away from their friends and family, these two are navigating the waters of new opportunities, bracing for winter and still trying to figure out the Yankee version of BBQ.

Albany.com's I Heart NY Y'all is written by Emmy winning former news reporter Heather Flanigan and is based off of her personal blog.  If you've got any survival tips for these Southerners, pass 'em on to
