I Heart NY y'all

Albany has dodged a couple of weather bullets lately. But our neighbors to the South haven't been so lucky. Last week Superstrom Sandy slammed into the East Coast, causing massive destruction and claiming the lives of 88 Americans. People are trying to recover from the storm in the harshest conditions, without electricity or running water and didn't really need that Nor'easter to add to the mess.

Count your blessings if you have a roof over your head tonight, because many of our fellow New Yorkers do not. If you're like me, you want to help but maybe don't know how or what to do. When I came across a tweet from the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library (@cphpublib on Twitter) the other day, I sprung into action.

The CPH Public Library is serving as a drop off point for those wanting to donate supplies to the relief effort. Items in demand were flashlights, D batteries, canned goods, toiletries, cleaning supplies, dish soap, winter coats and clothes and medical supplies.

My extreme couponing phase, added with my obsessive need to buy in bulk from Sam's Club or BJ's, provided a rich source of those much needed items, including baby supplies. I just took a look around the house and managed to load up four bags full of goods to donate.

The library and the Clifton Park Town Hall are serving as drop off locations this week until Friday. If you have a chance to stop by, please do so!

Every time my parents are in town from Missouri, I feel like I want to show them all that New York and the area around us has to offer. Trouble is, there's so much around here to do! Thankfully, their most recent visit overlapped with the New York State Fair, which was a perfect opportunity to show them some of the best of the best in the Empire State!

We loaded up Colt and made the drive to Syracuse. Brett & I've only been there once since we've lived here and I actually forgot about how long of a trip it is. Factor in feeding a baby and it seemed like it took forever to get there! The only downfall to the Fair being in Syracuse is about $13 in tolls we had to pay going on the Thruway. If you don't have Easy Pass, be sure to keep some extra cash on ya when making the trip. The trip was easy to make, they even have permanent signs directing you to the fairgrounds. It wasn't long before we were parked, on the shuttle bus and inside the gate to check things out.

The first thing we saw when walking in was a table set up for kid tags. Being a new parent and all, I had to check it out. Free information tags were provided to pin/tie to your kid in case they were separated or lost from their parents. Colt wasn't really going anywhere in his stroller without us, but what a great idea!

Growing up, my parents took me and my brother to the Mid-South Fair in Memphis several times. I remember seeing all the exhibits and riding the rides and how much fun it was as a child...and riding a camel. Probably because the camel's hair was scratchy on my legs. Funny how things stick with you over time? Turns out, fairs can be fun for adults too!

We saw tons of exhibits and booths. One of the most impressive sights was the giant sand sculpture! It was a huge mountain of sand that showcased the Olympics. I can't imagine how many man hours went into putting that thing together! It was such a work of art from all sides!

One of my favorite things at the Fair, whether State or County, are always the exhibits of quilts. I really enjoy trying to sew and have so much respect for those who do it well. I liked how organizers had set up displays of all the crafts entered with the quilts as sort of a centerpiece. I'm not sure if you have to win a ribbon at the county level to have an item entered at the state level, but everything was really impressive!

Growing up in rural Missouri & Arkansas, I've seen a lot of livestock in my day. As a television reporter, I once had to do a story about the new livestock barn at the NEA District Fair in Jonesboro, AR and shamelessly interviewed a cow. It was not my finest moment. But it was life experience that left me knowing my way around a fair barn. It was fun watching the expressions on Colt's face as he took in the sights (and smells) for the first time!

Colt didn't get to ride a camel on his first Fair visit, but he did see seals! How cool/random is that?

Maybe next year we can go on the rides...

...or maybe not! Some of them looked a little braver than I was willing to be.

Overall, my family and I were really impressed with the NY State Fair. It had a lot to offer, plenty to see and tons of things for families. It seemed clean and well organized. If you ever have the chance to go, take it! Y'all won't be disappointed!

And by the way, we took home some of the best souvenirs you could get...take a look:

*Special thanks to the New York State Fair for providing complementary passes. Thanks y'all!

Cracked up when I saw this book in the local section at the Barnes & Noble at Colonie Center Mall the other day. I guess when I think Zombie Apocolypse, the Hudson Valley doesn't come to mind...but now I know to be prepared!

Guess who came to visit us in NY? Colt's Mimi & Grandpa just couldn't stay away so they hopped on a flight to Albany from St. Louis.

IMG_1896.JPG

We entertained everyone at the airport with our fancy-pants sign and toothless smiles!

A friend of mine asked me what I was reading this summer and I had to laugh once I realized what was on my list! Take a look...

I ended up buying the 50 Shades series because the wait list on them at the library is just about 50 years...I'm guessing the same might be true of What to Expect this time next year!

I saw this sign the other day as I was pushing Colt's stroller in the Crossgates Mall in Albany. I have to admit, now that I'm a parent, I'm much more conscious of being near cigarette smoke. B.C. (before Colt) I would never sit in a smoking section at a restaurant (do they still have those?), but I had no problems if nearby smokers weren't affecting me.

Now that I'm a parent, it's a different story. There's nothing worse than rolling your child in his stroller out the door into a giant cloud of stinky smoke! A big "THANK YOU" from this new mom to the folks at Crossgates Mall for making the decision to go tobacco free!

Back home in the South, the temperatures are already high. My mom called the other day to complain about the 90+ degrees on the thermometer. With the cold front that came through last week, I sort of forgot that it's almost summer.

May 1 marked our two-year-anniversary in New York. We've seen and done a ton of stuff, but one of our favorite events is the Tulip Festival in Washington Park. The festival was the first outing we made as New Yorkers in 2010.

IMG_0239.JPG

Even going into our third year of flowers, it just amazes me to stroll through Washington Park and see the bright blooms everywhere! The colors and shapes of the flowers are always so stunning.

IMG_0252.JPG

This year's early warm weather may have damaged a few of the blooms, but I sure wasn't disappointed!

...especially when I found this blooming! :)

Colt made his first trip to a park the other day. I'm embarresed to say I'm not sure of the name, but it's the one right behind Wendy's & Hoffman's Car Wash on Central Avenue in Albany. It's a great place to just sit and relax without being bothered. Can't say that Colt got a lot of use out of the jungle gym, but we think he had a good time while we ate lunch there!

Take a look at just how much luggage it takes to get 1.5 people back from the holidays + two baby showers...

* Special thanks to my dad, Mr. Ed, for dragging all 180 lbs. of it around for me!

Hope y'all are having a wonderful holiday with your friends and loved ones this year!

Heather Flanigan

When Heather Flanigan and her husband Brett Garrett packed their bags and moved 1500 miles from Tupelo, Mississippi to upstate New York, they really had no idea what they were in for!  The newlyweds met in an Arkansas television newsroom before deciding to check out things on this side of the Mason-Dixon line.  Since then, they've cashed in their Southern hoe cakes for some Yankee cannoli.  Now  in a land far, far away from their friends and family, these two are navigating the waters of new opportunities, bracing for winter and still trying to figure out the Yankee version of BBQ.
