I Heart NY y'all

Recently in Tulip Fest Category

Back home in the South, the temperatures are already high. My mom called the other day to complain about the 90+ degrees on the thermometer. With the cold front that came through last week, I sort of forgot that it's almost summer.

May 1 marked our two-year-anniversary in New York. We've seen and done a ton of stuff, but one of our favorite events is the Tulip Festival in Washington Park. The festival was the first outing we made as New Yorkers in 2010.

Even going into our third year of flowers, it just amazes me to stroll through Washington Park and see the bright blooms everywhere! The colors and shapes of the flowers are always so stunning.

This year's early warm weather may have damaged a few of the blooms, but I sure wasn't disappointed!

One of the first things my husband and I did when we moved to Albany a year ago was check out the Albany Tulip Fest. We had such a good time that we made sure to put it on the calendar for 2011.

After our preview of the tulips, we were ready for the real thing!

Last year we ended up parking (what felt like) miles from Washington Park, but this year we had a plan of going a little earlier on Sunday. We found a spot in front of Jaw's house and only had to walk a few blocks to the park.

This year, we thought ahead to bring a little blanket so we would't have to stand eating lunch. We did make another visit to the crepes stand and it was just as good as we remembered! How can you go wrong with strawberries, chocolate and bananas?

We splurged on calories this year and also tried a dog bowl of cheese fires...mmm, mmm, good!

Washington Park was certainly in bloom over the Mother's Day weekend! This year's flowers did not disappoint and seemed more vibrant and brilliant than the ones we saw last year.

If you're in the area...stop by and tiptoe through the tulips, you won't be disappointed!

The Albany Tulip Fest is coming up this weekend, but I just couldn't wait to see those flowers! Brett and I loaded up over the weekend for a sneak peek of the dutch treats and weren't disappointed.

Brett also got busted having a little too much fun in the park!

Heather Flanigan

When Heather Flanigan and her husband Brett Garrett packed their bags and moved 1500 miles from Tupelo, Mississippi to upstate New York, they really had no idea what they were in for!  The newlyweds met in an Arkansas television newsroom before deciding to check out things on this side of the Mason-Dixon line.  Since then, they've cashed in their Southern hoe cakes for some Yankee cannoli.  Now  in a land far, far away from their friends and family, these two are navigating the waters of new opportunities, bracing for winter and still trying to figure out the Yankee version of BBQ.

Albany.com's I Heart NY Y'all is written by Emmy winning former news reporter Heather Flanigan and is based off of her personal blog.  If you've got any survival tips for these Southerners, pass 'em on to
