A revelation of sorts, I guess I might say. When did I cross over from the one being advised to, to becoming the advisor? These days I advise student on their academic path, I give advice to my children, guide many people struggling with life events and give advice to colleagues and friends. It seems a bit strange that it was not to long ago, I was being advised to in many areas of my life. Often, when I am in deep conversation with any one of my advisees, I pause briefly, questioning where the words of clarity and knowledge are coming from. I believe this is the age where wisdom can be identified. As with character, it is a learned trait. Only through modeling good character, do others learn what it means to be of good character. Wisdom to is a learned trait, as we must learn through our own experiences and those that have wisdom, to comprehend what it means to hold wisdom. However, wisdom doesn’t have much weight without the ability to pass on its purpose. As with the “pay it forward” model, be sure to embrace your own wisdomic character when you reach the age of identifying its presence. You never know whose watching and listening.
