Pure Romance

Thumbnail image for DSC_0403.JPGPure romance at any age - My husband and I have just returned from a trip to Sandals in Jamaica - it was amazing.  I have never been to an all inclusive before and the relaxed atmosphere surpassed all the cruises I have been on.  No one was trying to get you to buy cute drink with umbrellas, however - all those cute blender drinks were everywhere. No idea what was in the one they named Hummingbird - but oh so delightful ( strawberry, banana  - 3 types of rum ) yummmmmmm.  As a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants we were invited to a familiarization trip - we were wowed - it worked - I am sold and here to chat to anyone that wants to listen - i can not wait until we host our first Sandals night - feel free to send an email if you would like to be put on the invitation list - come and try a hummingbird ( they promised to send me the recipe ) This was not just for honeymoons and destination weddings  -although it was perfect for both.  It was thrilling to see couples in their 20's to their 80's all enjoying this escape. it was a piece of paradise and Jamaica was an Island of hospitality.  Absolutely everyone we met was lovely and thrilled to have us there -

Dream Books

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for red shoes .jpgI have just returned from an awesome all day seminar on weddings, honeymoons, and elopements in Mexico -- What a fabulous destination with just about everything possible to offer.
However - One of the greatest tid bits I picked up for the bride and groom had nothing to do with Mexico and everything to do with helping you in your planning no matter where you are getting married -- It is The Dream Book -
I know that when I first meet with couples they have a bit of the "deer in headlights " glaze to them - Excited - thrilled and overwhelmed all at once.  Since venues are one of the first stops on the list - I am often meeting at the very beginning of the planning.  One of the common feelings  is that most couples know so much more about what they do not want - than what they do want - often not even know what they can have and know what they would like to spend but no idea of what they have to spend.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words - well in wedding planning that is so true - When a bride shows me a picture or even pictures of their dream wedding , gown , table or ceremony, it tells me so much about their taste, style and the atmosphere they are looking to create.  So to help you and to help you help all of us -- Get clipping - I know that one of the first rites of passage with the ring is to also going to the newsstand and bookstores to clutch all of those gorgeous brides magazines.
Well that should be your homework - brides magazines - internet pictures = brochures -- whatever it takes
Clip gowns -ceremonies -shoes - chairs - table tops, cakes , food - even bras, shoes & hair style- Not only will this help you get a sense of what you love - it will help communicate it to your fiance, family, friends and vendors making the planning so much easier and fun for everyone.
( next time I will let you in on some of the fabulous things I learned of mexico after I come back next week from a research trip to Sandals in Jamaica on honeymoons, weddings and elopements )

Laurie Beckmann

I have been helping brides plan, coordinate, host weddings and ceremonies in the Capital District since 1978. Starting first with a love of cooking, I began to plan events and catered them. My background includes managing large events for Piccolo's at the Plachza where I coordinated Governor Carey's wedding to working in France as a chef on a private yacht.

The Capital District has been my home for over 27 years when my husband and I purchased a historic house in Altamont: The Appel Inn. A tavern from the 1700's, we turned it into a Bed and Breakfast. It was our good fortune in 1983, when a wonderful young couple knocked on our door and asked if we would host their wedding at the B&B.

The rest is history and the beginning of an amazing career that has allowed me to participate in hundreds of special occasions. The increased demand for events led to the design and construction of what we call The Gathering Space, a beautiful structure on our property that can accommodate over 150 people. We even added a bridal boutique where we make custom dresses. Over 1400 brides have passed through our elegant historic inn or The Gathering Space over the last 27 years.

I believe in simple elegance and love helping brides and their families create the day of their dreams, and in case anyone is wondering -- that first couple celebrated their 26th anniversary last November.
