Tulip Fest Closed Container Policy Means No More Open Containers

user-pic
In past years, Albany Tulip Fest attendees would tote along their coolers filled with cold alcoholic beverages of their liking, staking their spots on the lawn in front of the stage, without worry or concern that there would be any problems. Well all that is about to change...
Beginning this year, Albany Tulip Fest will now be enforcing a "closed container" policy, meaning no outside alcohol is permitted at the event, and responsible drinking will be confined to a beer garden by the main stage where beer and wine will be sold for $4 per beverage.

While many are blaming those pesky Kegs N Eggs rioters who got a out of hand last month (and caused over $6000 worth of damages to cars and property) for the strict new "closed container" policy enforcement this year at Tulip Fest, officials say it has nothing to do with them.

According to Mayor Jerry Jennings, the new closed container policy at Tulip Fest is an effort to make the event (which falls on Mother's Day weekend, May 6 - 8, 2011) more "family friendly."

As a mother, I will be the first to say kudos to Tulip Fest for making this policy change. Though I have never seen anyone getting out of hand at the event in previous years, there is always that worry, and it certainly sets a different tone for the event. I believe this is a change for the better, and will hopefully make it a more refined event that is more appealing as a Mother's Day weekend outing that is truly "family friendly," as is their goal.

Coolers will still be allowed at Albany Tulip Fest, but they will be subject to search, so make sure you are toting only non-alcoholic beverages and food!

What's your opinion?
Do you think the new closed container policy is a good move or a bad move on the part of Albany Tulip Fest organizers?

One beer garden? Really? You better make that whole area of the park the beer garden! The Tulipfest has never been like St. Patrick's day or Kegs and Eggs. Why the sudden restriction? Albany is just looking to make a buck apparently, like they don't make a lot that weekend anyway. I feel bad for the homeless who won't be making out this year. I for one won't be going to anymore Albany events and be treated like cattle, all corraled up with a bunch of sweaty immature kids. It's ridiculous!

I for one do not like the fact that everywhere I go these days I need to be searched either. We are being stripped of our freedoms everywhere we go. This park is big enough for everyone. Families don't normally go to the stage area and the people at the stage area normally don't go where all the kids are so I don't understand this and have to come to the conclusion that there's some kind of kick back for Albany to make this decision after all of these years. I think they are opening it up to a lot of confrontation and it could get ugly. How family friendly will it truly be while your kids are watching the police arresting people all over the place? You could probably make that a new event at the Tulipfest! Kids under 12 free!

As a mother, I find this ridiculous.

What's "family friendly" about keeping kids in the beer garden if you want a drink?

We just won't go, there are plenty of other things to do.

The mayor just blew another one of those rare events that you would even want to go to Albany.,(the Newark of New York.)Is he ever gonna learn that he is still a small town city that should relax some of the police state tactics that are driving casual money spending visitors away!

Another example of politicians ruining a perfectly good event! Next year there may be a dress code, (cloaked under the dubious excuse, because this is a family event). Maybe it the mayor wants to restrict the use of alcohol any where he should start at the state capital where those bush-league legislator's can't complete a budget on a regular basis, not to mention the state deficit.

Now thats a rant! how far did I get off topic.

I agree with all of the aforementioned comments !!!! Tulip fest is always a nice weekend where people alcohol consuming and non , go to hang out listen to good music and relax. No one will want to be crammed all together in a beer garden to have a drink. Albany is so lame !!! Go to all the big cities where there are four times as many people and none of these lame rules !! The city just needs a new way to f*%k us out of more money !

Hardhats and earplugs must be worn, and no dancing. Vendors will only be allowed to sell "healthy" food. We want this to be a safe event.
