What's New in Albany, Schenectady & Troy

Lifestyle: September 2011 Archives

The Neighborhood That Disappeared, a documentary showcasing the demolition of Little Italy in Albany, is set to release in the near future. Currently, the video is in the pre-production and fundraising stage, which the release format will depend on. The documentary features photographs that were taken by Bob Paley between 1962 and 1972.
catdog.jpgThe John T. and Jane A. Wiederhold Foundation has given the Animal Protective Foundation (APF) a $100,000 grant. The foundation was invited to apply for the grant, which will be used to expand the Community Spay/Neuter Program, which provides cost-effective treatment for cats in the Capital Region.

The surgical suite that APF has been using was never meant to accommodate the growing number of procedures that need to be done. On average, the APF provides about 3,000 surgeries every year.
Big bad Irene couldn't stop the Albany Riverfront Jazz Fest from being awesome! Great jazz performances and a cleaned-up riverfront -- topped off with Kevin Eubanks' performance (from the Tonight Show) and evening fireworks -- made for a spectacular Saturday.

The Hudson River itself was still muddy and rushing wildly, but people were enjoying the entertainment by the river and out on the dock, and it was still nice. Plus, once darkness set and the fireworks began, you couldn't see how muddy the water was anyway!

Were you at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Fest this weekend? What did you think?

Got an email earlier this afternoon around 3:20pm from Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corp, letting me know there are all kinds of bridges closed in the Schenectady area. The Mohawk River is flooded, so every bridge that crosses the river closed:

MOHAWK RIVER BRIDGES CLOSED
Bridge Access to and from Downtown Schenectady Affected

Alert!

Flooding conditions along the Mohawk River have prompted authorities to close all bridges across the Mohawk River in Schenectady County on Thursday afternoon, September 8, directly affecting travel to and from Downtown Schenectady.

Closures include:

  • Freemans Bridge
  • Western Gateway Bridge
  • I-890 Bridge in Rotterdam
  • Rexford Bridge

Portions of Route 5S west of Scotia and the Route 103 bridge between Glenville and Rotterdam Junction are also currently closed. Please plan accordingly and take every precaution when traveling near these areas.

For regular updates and alerts, please consult local media outlets.

Well, some of those local media outlets were reporting earlier today that Lock 9 at Rotterdam Junction had been damaged and might not be stable, but it turns out just one of the trusses was damaged and the soil eroded, but the NYS Canal Corporation alleviated fears by saying Lock 9 itself is still sound.
