Applying for a job is something that most people have to go through at least once in a lifetime. Often times included in this application process is a face to face interview with a manager or representative from a company. This is where that critical first impression is made and can often make or break it for the applicant. If there are three things that I have found to be helpful during my experiences in interviews, they would be preparation, confidence, and posture.<\/p>\n
Preparation- Show up to the interview fifteen minutes early, in deemed appropriate attire, with prior knowledge of the company. This will show the interviewer that you have the ability to take initiative and you are already invested in the company.<\/p>\n
Confidence- Starts with the handshake and continues on to how you present yourself. Be mindful of how loud and fast you are speaking and make sure to maintain eye contact throughout the duration of the interview. Employers want to see that you are not afraid of talking to people and that you can hold a conversation.<\/p>\n
Posture- Body language speaks volumes and interviewers can read what you are communicating through your body language, just as much as the words leaving your mouth. Sit up strait, professionally to display confidence and willingness to be there. Everybody has mechanisms of combating nervousness, be mindful of them and try to limit them; these mechanisms can be distracting to yourself and the interviewer(s). Do not cross your arms, this is a sign of being \u201cclosed\u201d or reserved and can be interpreted the wrong way even if you are doing it subliminally.<\/p>\n
