Some of my greatest memories and some of my best made friends have come from key events in Albany, such as Tulip Fest, Alive-at-Five, The Riverfront Jazz Festival and countless others that take place in Washington Park or on our Riverfront Pavilion.
I must say however, that up until now, the best kept secret is The City of Albany’s Special Events Department and some very special volunteers that make these signature events a reality for all of us.
And in case you’re wondering, you can be more a part of all this, too! Wondering what’s in it for you? Read on…
Mayor Jennings and all our City Officials have been truly amazing to us,
providing many great free events for us in Albany for great many
years. I for one am proud to serve as a volunteer and feel quite humbled to serve, as Sue Cleary and her team at The City of Albany’s Special Events team run things.
From the guys that put up the stage, the girl pouring your beer, your
aunt helping the kids at the bouncy bounce… and especially all those
guys that clean up all of our garbage at the end of each show… everyone works together to make these events the success that they are.
“Volunteer? What’s in it for me?”
- Primo Parking for all volunteers at tulip fest
- They feed you if you work enough hours
- You make friends
- It’s fun (I never feel like I’m actually working)
- You get the “inside scoop”
- They PAY for your TIPS training if you want to be a beer/wine server (next TIPS certification class is Feb 15 – sign up now!!)
So whether you have a heart for helping or just want to enjoy the free perks, volunteering for Albany’s special events is a rewarding way to spend your free time and make new friends.
Interested? You should be! Give Kaysie Memmer a call at The City of Albany’s Special Events Department, and she’ll be able to help you find the volunteer opportunities that best suit you or just answer any questions you may have about volunteering in Albany. Hope to see you volunteering beside me at Albany’s next big event! Until then, cheers!
