California grocery chain Trader Joe’s is coming to Wolf Road in Colonie this summer. Residents of the Capital Region have been waiting for this announcement for more than five years, as some have been commuting almost 100 miles to shop at the nearest store in Hadley, Massachusetts.
Residents in the area wanted their own store so badly, they formed a group in 2007 called “We Want Trader Joe’s in the Capital District”. Their wishes have been granted, and they’ll be saving on gas money soon!

Trader Joe’s is a funky grocery chain headquartered in California that recently ranked second on Consumer Reports Grocery Store Ratings, with a score of 88 out of 100. Wegman’s topped the list, and Publix came in third place, neither of which are present in the Capital Region. Hannaford scored a 79, and Aldi scored a 78 on the same survey. The rest of the results can be found in the May issue of Consumer Reports.
The franchise has 360 stores across the country, including one in Rochester, NY.
The supermarket competition is heating up in the region, with the recent opening of The Fresh Market in Latham, and ShopRite in Niskayuna. Price Chopper is also planning a huge overhaul of their Route 9 location in Latham, adding an outdoor dining courtyard, and a drive-through pharmacy.
Trader Joe’s will fill a portion of the building that sits between the former Friendly’s restaurant and Honeybaked Ham Company where Office Max used to be on Wolf Road. The new market is set to open August 3.
