Albany Skating Rink Reopens!

Empire “Skate” Plaza, the Albany NY skating rink, reopens for the 2012 season on Black Friday, November 23rd, with a plethora of events and special promotions planned throughout the winter.

What you need to know:

  • The Albany skating rink
    is located at the Empire State Plaza (cleverly nicknamed Empire “Skate” Plaza).
  • The rink is open from 11am – 8pm daily (weather dependent).
  • The rink is closed on Christmas Day.
  • Cost to skate: FREE
  • Skate rental is now located on the Plaza level adjacent to the
    rink.
  • Skate rental fees are $3 for children under 12 and $4 for adults. Skate rental will be available whenever the rink is open.

What you want to know:

  • There is no charge for skate rentals all day on Fridays, thanks to Hannaford.
  • The snack bar is open on weekends (including Fridays), offering hot dogs, burgers and fries, etc.
  • The snack bar is also open on school holidays.
  • There is a skate lounge with lockers for personal items, which is now located at the Plaza level.
  • Music plays while you skate.
  • There are many new events this year:
    • Every Friday
      Hannaford Supermarkets Free Skate Rental Fridays – No charge for skates from 11am – 8pm every Friday.
    • Sunday, December 2, 2012
      • 1pm – 6pm: New York State Holiday Tree Lighting and Fireworks Festival presented by SEFCU. The rink will be closed during the fireworks and will re-open afterwards.
      • 2pm – 4pm: Learn to Skate Clinic presented by BlueShield of Northeastern New York and featuring the Hudson Mohawk Figure Skating Club. Visit ogs.ny.gov to register.
    • Friday, November 30
      6pm – 8pm: Live holiday music with Johnny Rabb and the Jail House Rockers
    • Friday, December 14
      6pm – 8pm: Live holiday music with 3MinutePop!
    • Friday, December 21
      6pm – 8pm: Live holiday music with Chris Dukes
    • Friday, February 8
      6pm – 8pm: Mascot Mayhem (open skate with your favorite Capital District characters).
    • The first Saturday of January, February and March
      2pm – 4pm: Learn to Skate Clinics, sponsored by BlueShield of Northeastern New York. No charge for skates for those participating in the clinic. Visit ogs.ny.gov to register.
