It’s time to help out and give back to those in need during this holiday season! You can help Things of My Very Own, Inc. (TOMVO) provide warm clothes to homeless youth throughout the Capital Region at a ‘Sleep Out‘.
Several volunteers will be camping out at Broadway Used Tires located at 1471 Broadway in Schenectady to solicit donations of warm clothing and coats for children in need. The ‘Sleep Out’ will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 20 and will conclude at 4 a.m. the following day.
TOMVO is a referral based program that provides crisis intervention services and programs to children and families in ten counties within New York State. TOMVO will distribute items such as clothing, outerwear, school supplies, hygiene products, etc. within four hours of referral, to families in emergency situations.
“When children flee an abusive situation, the transition is often sudden and unexpected. It is not uncommon for children to flee an abusive situation wearing nothing more than a towel. Many of our clients are unaware of programs that exist to shelter non-abusive family members and their children. As a result, many families with children end up living in cars or alleys, trying to avoid county involvement that may result in separation from their children.” Things of My Very Own, Inc. founder and CEO Rayn Boncie states. “Weather reports predict that it will be 25 degrees on Thursday evening. Are we prepared? Probably not, but when someone becomes homeless they aren’t provided with items to keep them safe.”
Don’t forget to bring your donations of coats, undergarments, socks, and other warm weather on Thursday, December 20 between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. on December 21!
