Casey, a smart and creative 9-year-old was diagnosed with both mental health and sensory processing disorders, which affects her body’s interpretation of her five senses.
This brave young girl is now an ambassador to the Camp Colonie program, local summer camp program that has enabled over 20,000 people with disabilities or special needs to achieve equality, dignity, and independence in their own communities. This program has given Casey a brand new start.
Before coming to Camp Colonie, Casey struggled in her large classroom environment at school, which resulted in poor attendance. The idea of summer camp was a huge challenge for Casey and her family, but the supportive atmosphere of the Eastern Seals New York School Without Walls Summer Camp at Camp Colonie jump started her academic and social improvements.
Casey can now ride the bus most days and participates in the Colonie Pop Warner cheerleading program. She now attends a smaller-sized class for students with social-emotional needs and continues to make strides daily. And she is looking forward to the 2013 summer camp season!
Easter Seals New York, with 90 years of exceptional service, has provided the Capital Region with educational and community programs to foster awareness and acceptance.
