Known as the ‘4 in 24’ Extreme Field Renovation Project, the Tri-City ValleyCats have partnered up with BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets to revamp the home diamonds of four local youth baseball and softball leagues on April 16th. The twist? All four of these fields will be renovated within a 24 hour period!
The ‘4 in 24’ event is the kick-off of the Community Grounds Crew Program which assists local youth leagues with the maintenance and upkeep of their fields throughout spring and summer. The ValleyCats consider the Community Grounds Crew Program to be one of their most important annual initiatives. It will be entering its fifth straight season this spring!
The leagues that have been chosen are Cohoes Little League, Coxsackie-Athens Little League, Town of Hoosick Youth Baseball/Softball League and Niskayuna Baseball.
Coxsackie-Athens Little League’s softball program has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. Following the work done by the ValleyCats, the field will be in good enough shape to become home to the newly organized Coxsackie-Athens Girls Softball.
The Town of Hoosick’s field is still dealing with the effects from hurricane flood damage, while their primary field is filled with dirt and stones.
Cohoes Little League will be implementing a Challenger Program this season, which will give children with disabilities the opportunity to have a great time while playing ball. However, the host field has been severely damaged due to the harsh winter we’ve had.
Niskayuna’s baseball program has seen a lot of growth over the last couple of years. It has grown to consist of 50 teams and approximately 600 players. With such an increase in players and teams, the need for field options and maintenance requirements grows, as well.
All of the fields will receive brand new sod, bases, a home plate and pitcher’s mound. Also, the baselines will be measured to ensure they meet the correct specifications.
Head to a ValleyCats game this summer and show your support for our home team who is truly dedicated to giving back to their community!
