When I’m at a show, one of the first things I listen for is the collective inhale of the audience when the curtain opens and the sets are revealed. No matter the caliber of the acting, the story, or the music, it is always the scenery that draws me in. It seems as though the same could be true for Billy Davis, an Albany native who has gone on to become an accomplished set designer, and who’s work will make an appearance in Albany next month.
One of Davis’ Past Set Designs at Park Playhouse
Davis has extensive experience in set design, styling & staging, and scenic art, and often returns home in the summer to put his skills to use for Albany’s Park Playhouse in Washington Park. This unique venue hosts outdoor performances and provides art education programs to young people in the community. Davis’ past Park Playhouse set design credits include “Annie Get Your Gun” in 2010, “The Producers” in 2011, “Cabaret” in 2012, and “Spamalot” in 2013. This year, Davis has lent his talents to Park Playhouse for the first of its two summer shows: Singin’ in the Rain.
Singin’ in the Rain, a “tap dancing spectacular” made famous by the great Gene Kelly, will run Tuesdays through Sundays, July 1st – 26th at 7:30pm. Center section seats are $18, side section seats are $16, and lawn seating is free. Park Playhouse’s Facebook Page has noted that Davis “has some great tricks up his sleeve” for this show, so be sure to take special note of the sets if you go!
The Pajama Game, the second of Park Playhouse’s summer shows, will open on August 1st and run through the 22nd. Learn more about Park Playhouse and reserve your tickets today!
