Aerial gondolas are very popular for transporting skiers up mountains and are increasing in popularity as a means of transport in many European countries. They are also an attractive public transportation option for city planners and officials because the aerial gondolas travel above the congested streets and existing rails of major cities.
Albany-Rensselaer is a busy rail station, with over 800,000 passengers arriving and departing each year. The proposed gondolas would easily connect these passengers to downtown Albany across the river and may even prove to be an added attraction for tourists in the area.
Some residents are skeptical about the project, but many are excited at the prospect of the innovative and attractive public transportation solution. City officials are very intrigued by the potential for economic development and lower carbon emissions in the Capital Region, not to mention less congestion and better transportation solutions for tourists, business travelers, and residents.
