Albany has moved up six spots to #30 in the US News & World Report rankings of 100 Best Places to Live in the US. Two other Upstate towns also make the list, with Syracuse coming in at #28 and Buffalo at #33.
So why is Albany such a great place to live?
Compared to the rest of the country, Albany – and the Capital Region – have a relatively low cost of living but high quality of life.
According the USNWR, Albany offers a better value than other, similarly sized metro areas when housing costs are compared to median household income. Albany is especially seeing growth in jobs in the tech sector (and is actually one of the best places in the US to find a tech job!).
Kind of a running joke among locals, Albany really is three hours from everything (Boston, NYC, Montreal, and the Finger Lakes come to mind), making the Capital Region one of the most convenient places to live on the East Coast.
Of course, Albany and the surrounding metro areas have their own vibrant downtown and cultural scenes that attract visitors and convince people to move to the area. Without the crowds of a larger metro area, but with all the cultural and social advantages, it’s no wonder that Albany is not only in the top 100 Best Places to Live in the US, but solidly in the top 50!
