The annual Tulip Fest has become a signature spring event in Albany as the city celebrates their Dutch heritage with events, entertainment, and beautiful tulips in Washington Park. One of the festival’s major traditions is the coronation of the Tulip Queen, a local young woman who will spend the year participating in volunteer projects with her Tulip Court. How to Nominate the 2019 Albany Tulip Queen
The City of Albany recently announced that nominations are open for the 2019 Albany Tulip Queen & Court. This tradition stretches back to the late 1940s, and today a committee of local leaders choose the queen and court after an extensive interview process. The qualifications include:
- A strong sense of community
- Knowledge of the Albany area and its history
- Leadership skills
- Eligible nominees are extraordinary young women between the ages of 18-24 residing in Albany County during their year of reign (May 2019 – May 2020)
You can nominate a young woman by visiting http://www.albanytulipqueen.com/nominate/ and filling out the online form. Or, you can submit a letter detailing the candidate’s qualifications to “Albany Tulip Queen Selection Committee, City Hall, Room 402, 24 Eagle St., Albany, New York 12207.” The letter must feature the candidate’s name, address, and phone number, and the name and phone number of the nominator.
Attend the Coronation at This Year’s Tulip Fest
During the 2019 Albany Tulip Fest, the Tulip Queen will be crowned in an elaborate coronation ceremony on Saturday, May 11. The Tulip Queen will receive a $5,000 scholarship, and each of the four Court members will receive a $1,500 scholarship award upon completing their year of service, which will include Albany community outreach programs and educational initiatives.
