The Sage Colleges in Troy, NY is remembering the principal that was killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by creating a new education center in her honor.
Dawn Hochsprung, who was principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School when a gunman opened fire on the school on Dec. 14, the gunman killed 20 children, Hochsprung and five other adults.
Sage is creating the Dawn Hochsprung Center for the Promotion of Mental Health and School Safety, as part of its Esteves School of Education. Hochsprung was a doctoral student at Sage’s educational leadership program at the time of the Newtown, Conn., shooting.
The college held a memorial on Feb. 9 at the Opalka Gallery on its Albany campus to remember Hochsprung being a hero on the dark day of the shooting. The Sage Colleges have started The Dawn Hocksprung Memorial Fund and will honor her with her posthumous doctorate in May of 2015.
There has been no date set for when the center will be completed.
