About this event

Bridge Street Theatre opens its 2026 MainStage Season with "Bakersfield Mist" by Stephen Sachs, directed by Mark Perry.

When Maude, an unemployed bartender living in a California trailer park, buys a painting for a few dollars, she becomes convinced it may be a long-lost Jackson Pollock worth millions. When Lionel Percy, a renowned New York art expert, arrives to authenticate the work, he expects a quick and easy dismissal. Instead, he finds himself in a sharp, funny, and increasingly personal battle over art, authority, and who gets to decide what something is worth.

As their clash unfolds, the question of whether the painting is real gives way to something deeper — about class, credibility, instinct, and the human need to be seen and believed.

By turns hilarious and unexpectedly moving, "Bakersfield Mist" is a gripping two-person play about truth, value, and the stories we fight to hold onto.
