About this event
Watch as renowned potter Rick Hamelin delves into the rich pottery legacy in New England and shares the captivating stories of the brave redware potters who fought valiantly during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. This unique event will be filled with tales of the unusual, the unknown, and the unpredictable and we invite you to explore the trade during the hands-on portion of the program. You'll have the opportunity to experience the magic firsthand! Picture yourself passing from person to person a freshly made pot or feeling the texture of a dry and wet pot as it rotates on the wheel. Each participant will have the chance to create their very own pinch pot. Using the simple technique of pinching clay between your thumb and finger, you'll craft a unique unfired cup which you will get to take home with you. Whether you're a pottery enthusiast, history lover, or simply looking for a fun and hands-on experience, this workshop is for you.
Hailing from Central Massachusetts, Rick Hamelin has been honing his pottery skills since 1976 and has developed a deep fascination for the rich history of redware pottery. His works have been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions throughout the country, most recently in the show “American Clay: Modern Potters, Traditional Pots” at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. Drawing from his many years of experience teaching and working in museums, Hamelin continues to share his knowledge and passion for pottery with lectures and demonstrations throughout New England.
Following the demonstration there will be refreshments available to celebrate the opening of the 2024 season.
