Nothing exciting is going on… No activity for your mind or body to keep you engaged. Just a little bit of pie or some potato chips always make you feel better.
Boredom is a frequent saboteur in healthy eating. We all have moments when our minds are not actively engaged or we are not physically moving. Maybe you’re sitting at your desk at night, browsing the internet when the craving for sweets begins. Or you are mindlessly watching TV and making trips to the kitchen for snacks. Perhaps it’s being mom to the little ones all day with no adult conversation.
The best way to handle these times is to have a plan when boredom strikes and the cravings hit. Make a list that fits your needs and life. If the activity can be done quickly, is enjoyable, available and is eating incompatible, then it will distract you from the craving or urge to overeat.
Here is a list of some activities to try. Keep in mind that you may need to try several different ones to find the mix that effectively works for you. Better yet… come up with your own. You are the best judge of your inner comfort.
- Walk your dog (or just yourself)
- Call a friend
- Write in a gratitude journal
- Light some aroma candles
- Take a warm bath
- Do self-massage
- Make a bucket list
- Take 5 deep belly breaths
- Dance
- Tell someone you love them
- Write out your accomplishments for the week
- Meditate
- Read a chapter in book
- Read a magazine
- Enjoy a hot cup of tea
This is just the beginning of possibilities. The list is endless depending on each person’s desires. This is also a good time to try new things in small snippets. If you have never done yoga, try one position. Buy a DVD or go to an instructional yoga website. If it interests you, join a local class. Chase the boredom and cravings away!
