The high gas prices and rising airfare costs have locals in search of ways to have fun at home this summer. Luckily, there are many great ways to have a blast on vacation at home in the Capital Region. Check out these Albany staycation ideas, perfect for couples who want to stay local this summer.
Dinners out! Think about when you go away on vacation... unless your room has a kitchen in it, you generally eat every meal out. You can make it feel like a vacation by grabbing a bite to eat out at local restaurants throughout the week. The cook of the house will appreciate the break!
Beach day! Pack up and take a day trip to the beach. Grafton, Saratoga, Sacandaga and Lake George beaches are all within an hour from downtown Albany.
Get lost! Inevitably, vacation driving means you end up getting lost and asking for directions. Have some fun by exploring nearby communities without worrying about how to get back. After you’re lost, try out a new restaurant or ice cream shop, and ask someone for directions on how to get back to Albany because, “we’re not from around here.”
Movie night! Plan a night watching the latest box office hits at the local theatre, or save money by renting a DVD from Blockbuster and transforming your home into a theatre. Dim the lights, turn up the volume and munch on some popcorn, nachos and candy while you enjoy the show. For a real treat, pick up your two favorite movies and make it a double feature!
In-room massage! Make believe you are at a luxury resort and take turns giving each other a half-hour massage. For a fun twist, use scented oils or lotions.
Go to the park! Head to Washington Park (or another local park) with a beach blanket and a picnic lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing and gazing into each other’s eyes or just tossing a ball or Frisbee around. And don’t forget the sunscreen! Find parks in the Albany area
Splash around! Spend a couple of sunny afternoons cooling off in one of the public pools in Albany. They are free and open to the public 7 days a week, but you may want to go on a weekday to avoid crowds. You may also want to check out the pools in Saratoga or head to the beaches in Lake George.
Go to the fair! Have a playful night at the fair, riding rides, eating cotton candy and just becoming kids again. The summer is packed with fun fairs and festivals, including the Altamont Fair, Saratoga County Fair, Washington County Fair, Schaghticoke Fair and others. Get more details on local fairs near Albany. Remember to bring extra cash for snacks, games and goodies!
Local events! There’s always something going on in Albany and throughout the Capital Region. Check out the community calendar for upcoming concerts, arts events and other top events, grab brochures from the visitor’s center, read flyers around town or listen to your favorite radio station for some more great ideas.
Don’t forget the camera! Snap shots of your adventures each day or take along the video camera to remember your home vacation for years to come. Ask a stranger to take pictures of the two of you together while you’re out. Afterwards, create a photobook or picture slideshow of the images, and label it Albany Staycation 2009.
