Albany's summer entertainment scene is rich with free concerts, movie nights, and live performances, many of which make for a great low-key date night or group outing.

  • Alive at Fiveis one of the Capital Region’s signature summer events. Held every Thursday evening at Jennings Landing, this free concert series features national and local acts with spectacular views of the Hudson River.
  • Empire State Plaza’s Summer at the Plaza includes a mix of concerts and cultural events. 
  • Head across the river to Troy forRockin’ on the River, another free midweek concert series with live music, food trucks, and a fun community vibe.
  • In Schenectady, catch Jazz on Jay, a relaxing lunchtime concert series held in Jay Street Marketplace. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a great midday date option or way to break up the workweek.
  • For a theatrical evening under the stars, check out Park Playhouse’s production of Oklahoma! in Washington Park. Reserved seats range from $30 to $40, but lawn seating is completely free.
  • Bonus tip: Cohoes Music Hall, operated by the same organization at the Park Playhouse, also offers budget-friendly performances and are showing The Little Mermaid and Moana Jr. this year.
  • The Albany Institute of History & Art is hosting a free summer concert series with evening performances on July 16, August 13, and September 17. 
  • Wrap up your summer evenings with Capitol Park After Dark, a free outdoor movie series. Upcoming screenings include The Princess Bride (August 20), To Catch a Thief (August 27), and Some Like It Hot (September 3). Bring your own snacks and a lawn chair for a classic cinema experience under the stars.

Parks & Scenic Walks or Bike Rides

  • The New York State Museum is free to visit (donations are suggested) and offers exhibits on natural history, regional culture, and more. While you’re there, ride the elevator to the Corning Tower Observation Deck for panoramic views of Albany.
  • Visit the Schuyler Mansion, once home to Revolutionary War General Philip Schuyler. Tours are inexpensive and give insight into the city’s colonial past.
  • Historic Cherry Hill provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of five generations of the Van Rensselaer family. Admission is budget-friendly and includes guided tours.
  • Climb aboard the USS Slater, a restored World War II destroyer escort docked on the Hudson River. Admission is affordable, and the tour offers a unique, immersive history experience.
