‘Tis the season for more than just holidays and family time. If you love outdoor fitness and live in an area with all four seasons, it’s getting chilly out there! Here are a few key things to remember to keep you rolling, even when the weather tries to hold you hostage indoors.
- Layer, layer, layer. It’s better to be warm than cold and you can always remove once your body temperature rises. Try websites like runningwarehouse.com for some great deals on winter weather layers. Totally worth the investment!
- Hydrate. Just because you’re not sweating as much, doesn’t mean you aren’t losing valuable water supply. It can be just as dangerous to run dehydrated in the cold as it can in the heat. Your body is already working hard to keep warm.
- Grab a buddy and some safety gear. Winter months also bring shorter days and less light. It’s downright dangerous to be working out when it’s dark out. Grab some reflective gear, a headlamp if necessary and make sure you’re in a group or you at least have a partner.
- Wear sunscreen. Cloudy, gloomy, cold days still can burn – especially if you’re fair skinned. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can go without protection. In fact, the reflection of the sun in snow can double your chance of getting a burn.
- Build your base. Whatever your sport or training may be, winter months are a great time to do longer, slower workouts to build muscle memory and stamina. Take it slow, enjoy the company of others and hone your skill for the coming spring!
