I usually find that after I get past the initial “get out of the house” moment and truly get down to the work of working out, that I come away with a clearer more focused mind, don’t you? So much research has been done about why that is. Here are four ways working out helps make us happy and how to increase its impact:
- Play is what makes us human – Find ways to incorporate play into your workouts. Play creates a happy, creative, adaptive brain that helps us focus.
- The foundation of happiness is our connection with others – Isn’t working out with a partner more invigorating and enjoyable? Studies have shown that even those in poverty have scored higher on happiness ratings when they have social support networks. Grab a friend or a group of friends!
- A little stress is a good thing – A lot of stress and elevated cortisol levels are contagious and can seep into family dynamic. Slight stress on your body/ mind creates improvements, but too much can create long term damage. Working out out releases stress and tension – even just a few minutes a day of activity helps clear your head.
- Daydreaming is where creativity comes from – Have you ever found that after a nice walk or a jog you have a great idea, remember something you’ve forgotten or had a moment of clarity on an issue you’re struggling with? While good hard workouts are excellent for your health, strive to also incorporate easy or moderate workouts that include a bit of repetitive motion – it allows you to daydream a bit!
The message over all is this – We’re only here for a limited time. What are your priorities and what do you want to accomplish? Don’t think taking time for yourself to workout is a waste – it’s furthering your brain power and creative development, which is highly important to becoming a happier, healthier and more productive spouse, parent, worker and much much more!
What workouts do you do that help you find happiness and clarity?
Sincerely,
K
