Albany, New York - There is plenty to do in the Capital City, but filling up your calendar with fun can get expensive. Luckily there is an array of scheduled events and opportunities in the area that will cost you nothing. Here are 10 things to do in Albany that are completely free!

Corning TowerThe Corning Tower Observation Deck: Check out views from the 42nd floor of the Corning tower, the tallest building in NY State outside of NYC. You can see the Hudson River valley, the Adirondacks, the Catskills, the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, and even the Governor?s Mansion. Just bring a valid photo id and you are all set! The New York State Museum: Perfect for a rainy day or if you are just seeking relief from the heat! The NY State Museum offers seasonal exhibits throughout the year. The museum also offers free programs every Saturday for the whole family. For more information call (518) 474-5877.

1st Friday: The first Friday of every month art galleries of downtown Albany open their doors and offer specials to strengthen the arts in the surrounding community. This venue has grown to include about 20 to 30 venues each month. 1st FriDAY takes place from 11am to 2pm and night events restart at 5pm. Call the Lark St BID for more information, (518) 434-3861.

Capital BuildingTour of the Capitol Building: The New York State Capitol Building showcases masonry that took over 25 years to complete. Guided tours of the New York State Capitol are available seven days a week. If you are planning your trip in advance, contact the Office of General Services: Visitor Assistance at (518) 474-2418 for tour times.

Farmers Market: Each week a local farmers market takes place at the Empire State Plaza. Buy local fruits and veggies from the surrounding Capital District area. Purchasing locally grown produce is not only better for you, but also helps the local economy.

Washington Park: Spend some time enjoying the weather. Plan a picnic in Washington Park. Pack lunch or purchase from a local vendor and don?t forget your Frisbee and your favorite companion!

The Corning Preserve
: Do you enjoy Rollerblading or biking? Get out and get your exercise on the Corning trail. This stretch of the bike path runs along the Hudson River and offers great views! If you head north and travel to Watervliet you?ve gone 4.5 miles!

In the Summer ...

The Giants Training Camp: The New York Giants come to town each summer for training season in Albany. The Super Bowl XLIV Champions gather up to 60,000 fans each training season. All team members are in attendance, including star quarterback Eli Manning, in preparation for the start of the season. The camp will runs for the month of August only. Don't miss out! Alive at Five: What could be better than enjoying your Thursday evening with a sunset on the river and live music? Not much. Alive at Five brings both popular national and local artists to the stage this summer, with summer performances from early June to September.

The Park Playhouse: This theater group has been producing free, outdoor summer performances in Albany?s Washington Park for over 21 years. In past seasons the Park Playhouse has presented hits such as Annie Get Your Gun and The Wiz! Performances take place in the Lakehouse Amphitheater. For more information call (518) 434-0776.
