After attending one too many networking events where people repeat the same tired phrases and pitches, it is time for the elevator pitch to die.
Here’s 5 reasons it should die:
- People rarely (if ever) follow the rules and stick to the time limit.
- People often sound like they are just going through the motions.
- Elevator speeches take up so much time (especially if several people are doing them).
- Who remembers anything from an elevator speech?
- People often come unprepared.
Here’s 5 things that should replace the elevator pitch:
- A good three line introduction you can put in the chat on Zoom, or in an introductory email on LinkedIn.
- Sharing your name, the name of your company, and one reason you came to the event today. That’s it.
- Share an impact statement. “I’m Robert Braathe, and this week at Career Service Station we found a job seeker a job that landed him a 25% increase in pay. Let’s talk about how I can do that for you or someone you know.”
- Make a positive statement about someone else you know on the call or during the meeting.
- Share a fun fact about yourself that no one else knows yet.
