Civil War medicine has been described by the three "B's" ? butchery, barbaric and brutal ? by many historians on The History Channel and The Civil War Journal?and some of them were physicians also. This is a flawed approach however. We must look at medicine and even soldiering in the context of the time in which it occurred, not from our perspective 150 years later. Civil War medicine was flawed; but great advances occurred in medicine because of the War. This presentation will deal with some of the truths and myths about 19th Century medicine and will cover the practical advances that occurred during the War, but are often overlooked. A replica capital amputation kit and other medical items will be on display as part of this presentation. The presenter, Dr. Matthew Farina, is a retired pediatric cardiologist, who has been a student of Civil War history for many years. He is a past present of the Capital District Civil War Round Table, and has been editor of its newsletter since 2000. Registration is recommended.

This outstanding program is facilitated by Alzheimer's Association staff members and is being made available in three convenient locations. Each of the five sessions is two-hours long. Participants will each receive a manual to refer to at home, and will have "homework" following each session that will provide opportunities to practice new skills, put new knowledge to the test, and assess how things are working between sessions.

Gentle Yoga is a style of yoga that is far less strenuous than other types of yoga. It is as little or as much as you want it to be. Its modifications lower the intensity of the workout. If you would like it, chair yoga can be a part of your practice. Everything is designed to reduce the strain on your body. Lessening strain does not mean lessening benefits. The graceful and deliberate postures (Asanas) will strengthen and tone your entire body. The breathing exercises (Pranayama) will deepen your practice and bring stillness and calm. Class ends with a period of deep relaxation.
Restorative Yoga- WE work hard in our lives, while we may sleep, we rarely take time to rest. Our class is based on teachings of deep relaxation designed to benefit all of the organ systems of the body.
Bring yoga mat and water; we will add lots of little and big props, items that can be easily found at home. As Yoga Journal says, "This is what yoga is all about: stilling our fidgety bodies and calming our rambling minds so that we may rest quietly in the present moment. . .
