From F-16 Flights to Optic Care to Junk Removal: Dan's Journey to JDog

Before Dan Bearor was a Capital Region business owner, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a tactical aircraft maintenance specialist in the mid-1980s. He was the crew chief responsible for launching, recovering, and maintaining multimillion-dollar F-16 fighter jets across international deployments in Spain, Italy, and Turkey, as well as bases in Florida.

“When you’re responsible for a fifteen-million-dollar aircraft, you know that everyone is counting on you to make sure that pilot takes off safely and returns safely,” Dan explains. “The attention to detail, the quality control, and the unwavering professionalism stay with you forever.”

Following military service, Dan spent more than three decades building a career in the optical industry, holding regional and wholesale leadership roles for national brands like Target Optical and BJ’s Optical. During that time, he mastered operational logistics, team building, and systemic problem solving.

Between 2018 and 2021, Dan brought these operational strengths to JDog, helping to design intricate procedures used by local teams as well as the national franchise network. At the time, the local franchise was operated by Dan’s brother and sister-in-law, with Sam working in daily field operations starting in 2016. 

When the family decided to transition away from the business, Dan and Sam joined forces to purchase the franchise in March of 2026, officially taking over the core territories of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy.

“With thirty-plus years in optics and corporate leadership, stepping into junk removal might seem like a sharp turn,” Dan says. “But I have never felt more pride working for a company than I do right now working with my son.”

“We are veteran-owned, but we also want to be clearly veteran-operated,” Dan notes. “My goal is to partner closely with the local VA healthcare network and regional chambers of commerce to highlight steady, supportive employment opportunities for veterans transitioning back into civilian life.”
