The New York State Purple Heart Memorial

The New York State Purple Heart Memorial, located on Madison Avenue, honors New Yorkers who have been awarded the Purple Heart, the oldest military decoration in the world currently in use.

Created in 1782 by General George Washington, the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the US Armed Services who have been wounded at the hands of the enemy, or their next of kin.
