Cider, Ghost Tours & Oktoberfest: Fall Activities for Adults In & Near Albany, NY

By Brooke Stehle

Fall around Albany isn't just about apple picking, pumpkin patches, and daytime trips to the farm. Once the temperatures start to dip, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season with a more grown-up spin.

Sip your way through local cider releases, hear the darker side of Albany's history on an evening ghost tour, raise a stein at Oktoberfest, or head outside for an adventure before the season ends. Here are some of our favorite fall activities for adults in and near Albany.

Sip Into the Season at Nine Pin Cider

Nine Pin Cider is a natural place to start a fall outing in Albany. Known as New York's first farm cidery, Nine Pin has a tasting room at 929 Broadway with a rotating lineup of its own hard ciders, along with New York beers, cocktails, and food.

Fall is an especially fitting time to stop in. Nine Pin regularly experiments with new flavors and limited releases, and its current 26er Challenge has new small-batch ciders scheduled to debut throughout September and October 2026. The cidery also makes seasonal flavors like Apple Pie-Secco, which combines New York apples with vanilla and cinnamon.

Check Nine Pin's current events and social pages before heading out, too. Trivia, music, special releases, pop-ups, and other tasting room happenings can give you an extra reason to make a night of it.

Hear Albany's Haunted History With Albany Ghosts

If you prefer your fall activities with a darker edge, Albany Ghosts by US Ghost Adventures takes guests through some of the capital city's most storied locations after dark.

The standard tour lasts about an hour and covers roughly one mile, beginning outside the New York State Capitol. Along the way, guides dig into local legends and eerie stories connected to Albany's centuries of history, including tales tied to the Revolutionary era, the Capitol, the Hudson River, and other historic sites.

This isn't simply a string of jump scares. The history-and-lore format makes it a fun fall date night or group outing for adults who want to learn something about Albany while getting into the Halloween spirit.

Take in the Fall Scenery With Dutch Apple Cruises

See fall in the Capital Region from a different perspective aboard Dutch Apple Cruises. The riverboat departs from downtown Albany for sightseeing cruises along the Hudson River, and its season typically continues through the end of October.

That timing makes a cruise an easy addition to your fall plans, particularly as foliage begins to brighten the riverbanks. Regular sightseeing cruises run for about 90 minutes, while select sunset cruises offer another way to get out on the water later in the day.

There's a full bar and snack bar onboard, with beer, hard cider, seltzers, and other drinks available for purchase, so adults can grab a beverage and settle in for the scenery.

Challenge Yourself at WildPlay Thacher

Ready to trade a relaxing fall afternoon for something more adventurous? WildPlay Thacher in Voorheesville offers aerial adventures amid the scenery of Thacher State Park.

Friend groups and couples looking for a challenge can take on the Classic and Extreme Adventure Courses, or add the What's to Fear Jump, which sends participants off a platform 40 feet above the ground. There are bundled options for those who want to combine the courses and jump into one adrenaline-packed outing.

After your adventure, leave some time to explore Thacher State Park itself and enjoy the fall views.

Raise a Stein at Oktoberfest Events In & Near Albany

Oktoberfest is one of fall's most adult-centered traditions. Celebrations across the Capital Region typically run from mid-September through early October, with German beer, bratwurst, pretzels, live music, and games like stein-holding contests.

In Albany, Wolff's Biergarten hosts an annual 21+ Oktoberfest block party on Broadway. Head north for Saratoga Oktoberfest, a 21+ celebration in downtown Saratoga Springs with Druthers craft beer and German-inspired fare from Franklin Square Market. You could also make a weekend of it at Lake George Oktoberfest, a three-day festival in the southern Adirondacks.

Get Scared at Double M Haunted Hayrides

Make the trip north to Ballston Spa for one of the area's classic Halloween thrills at Double M Haunted Hayrides.

The experience starts with a tractor-drawn haunted hayride through the dark before continuing into additional walk-through attractions. Grab your partner or a group of friends and lean into the fear factor.

It's the kind of outing for adults who actually want their Halloween plans to be scary, and the combination of the hayride and multiple haunted experiences makes it more of a full night out than a quick haunted-house walkthrough.

Find the Wine at Schuyler Farms

For a fall tasting experience that's far from your standard bar or tasting room, take the drive to Schuyler Farms in Schuylerville for Find the Wine & Where's the Beer.

This 21+ event sends guests into the farm's corn maze, where they'll discover wine and craft beer tasting stations hidden along the way. It's part tasting event, part fall adventure, with live music adding to the evening atmosphere.

The 2026 dates are September 12, 25, and 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Schuylerville is a drive from Albany, but if your ideal adults-only fall outing involves wandering through a corn maze with tastings along the way, this one is worth the trip.

Spend a Fall Afternoon at Indian Ladder Farms

Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont is home to a cidery and brewery, tasting room and biergarten, and DeFazio's Pizza Garden, making it an easy fall destination even before you factor in its special events.

One event worth watching for is Hawaiian Oktoberfest, Indian Ladder's playful mashup of tropical flavors and Oktoberfest traditions. Past celebrations have paired live music with specialty drinks like tropical IPA, pineapple-forward hard cider, cocktails, and German-style Märzen.

Kick Off Fall at the Hops & Harvest Festival

Albany gets the season started early with the Hops & Harvest Festival at Empire State Plaza.

The free festival returns on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. With craft beer from New York breweries and live music at the heart of the experience, it's an easy after-work option for getting friends together and raising a glass to the start of fall.

Think of this one as your kickoff to the season: an evening downtown, local brews, music, and plenty of fall outings still ahead.

Make the Most of Fall in the Albany Area

From sipping New York cider and raising a stein at Oktoberfest to wandering a haunted Albany street after dark, fall offers plenty of excuses for adults to get out and enjoy the season.

Pick a favorite, gather a few friends or plan a fall date night, and make the most of autumn in and around Albany while it lasts!
