The last time I dined at Dakota Steakhouse in Latham, NY was years ago. I was a teenager, and I can barely recall the meal I ate: steak and mashed potatoes. More memorable, however, was the card they mailed me on my birthday as a member of their birthday club. It was addressed to: Dorothy Coil. (note: my maiden name was Destiny Cail)
Well, aside from getting my name completely wrong, they weren’t that far off with the meal. I’m not a huge steak lover, but it wasn’t bad, and the other members of my dining party seemed satisfied with their meals, though no one was raving about the dishes either.
But it was clear to see upon driving past that busy corner just off the
Northway where Dakota sat that the parking lot was not as busy as the
surrounding shops and restaurants. They tried adding a sign that said,
“Open For Lunch” to try to attract more lunchtime business, but
apparently that couldn’t sustain the business they needed to justify
staying open in the face of their parent company DWH1’s bankruptcy
reorganization, and Dakota Latham closed its doors for good last week after dinner
service on Monday, July 25th.
Apparently the staff had no prior knowledge or inkling that this might be coming, and Dakota Latham management was notified at 8pm that night that it would be their last night.
Dakota Steakhouse in Latham closed 16 1/2 years after its opening in
1994. This leaves about 40-50 people jobless who were employed by
Dakota.
