Albany was named one of the top three places in the country to find a technology job – but that’s not all! This ranking significantly contributes to a second study, naming Albany as one of the top 100 best places to live. Here’s where exactly we ranked and why.

Albany came in at number three in Top 10Best Places to Find a Job in Technology, based on a study recently conducted by US News. Here’s the full list – we even beat out known tech hub Seattle!

The study looked at the strength of the overall job market in each of the 100 most populous metro areas and the year-over-year growth of opportunities in the technology industry in those areas.
US News notes that technology is a growing field across the nation, having created nearly 200,000 jobs in 2015. In fact, technology is so huge, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 12% growth in the industry by 2024, equal to about 500,000 new jobs.
However, certain cities are embracing the technology sector more than others, and Albany is one of them. In other words, not only is Albany brimming with technology jobs, but we’re likely to see jobs in technology increasing year after year. If you’re looking to break into this field, Albany is the place to be!
US News says about our city: “Albany isn’t likely to come to mind as a leading technology center, but the New York Capital Region contains a number of educational and research facilities that focus on biotechnology, nanotechnology, and life sciences, such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute.”
Best 100 Places to Live
It should go without saying that when looking at the best places to live, we must take into consideration the job market. With Albany’s job market undoubtedly boosted by our growing technology field, we were sure to be a contender for a top place to live!
Albany came in at number 36 out of the top 100 places to live in the US. The study notes that we’ve not only seen job growth in the technology industry, but in healthcare as well.
In fact, when looking at the main factors the study took into account – desirable place to live, good value, high quality of life, net migration, and strong job market – Albany scored the highest in the job market sector.
US News also says about our great city: “Throughout years of administrative changes, Albany has maintained a lively downtown that serves as both a commercial and cultural center. The city doesn’t have the crowds or costs of a major city, and Albany has an old-world appeal to it.”
The report additionally points out our ideal central location – we have the Adirondack Region to the north, New York City and the Hudson Valley to the south, the Finger Lakes wine region to the west, and the Berkshire mountains to the east. We’re a prime spot for both food and outdoor recreation!

Even if you’re not in the technology field, between the overall job market, the prime central location, and the additional advantages cited, it’s looking like we’re pretty lucky to live in the Albany area!
