Whether you’re a fan of ice skating, dazzling light displays, or exploring the outdoors, the holiday season is a wonderful time of year to visit Albany. The city comes alive with festive events like the Capital Holiday Lights, and in some years, early snowfall helps transform the region into a snowsports destination.
There’s a lot to love about Albany, and in a recent article, U.S. real estate agency Rocket Homes ranked it as the 3rd best place in the Northeast to experience a winter wonderland for the holidays.
Discover the Holiday Spirit in the City of Albany
If you want to get into the holiday spirit in New York’s Capital Region, then Albany is the place to be. Each year, the Price Chopper/Market 32 Capital Holiday Lights in the Park welcomes families to drive through the spectacular attraction and check out over 125 light displays and scenes. You’ll be able to see light displays of all shapes and sizes from the comfort of your vehicle.
Or, take a drive to downtown Albany and visit some of the community’s restaurants and stores. Enjoy seeing all the decorated buildings and storefronts as you dine, shop, and stroll through the city.

Make Plans for Snowsports & Early Winter Fun
One of the main reasons Rocket Homes chose to feature Albany in their article is because the city receives an average snowfall of 16 inches from November through December. This opens up the area’s forests and parks for snowshoeing and other outdoor winter activities. In fact, Rocket Homes notes that there are 20 winter recreation resources within 100 miles of Albany, and 16 nearby forests and parks.
You can also experience early winter fun at the Empire State Plaza’s outdoor ice skating rink, which is open to the public from December – March (weather dependent).
